Radical Masters: Spa-Francorchamps, Race 2
9th May 2010
The 360 Racing pairing of Terrence Woodward and Ross Kaiser made it a weekend to remember this morning, taking the second win of the Shell Racing Solutions Radical Masters event at Spa-Francorchamps.
Fellow 360 Racing driver Stuart Moseley led the field into Eau Rouge on the first lap, but his pace began to drop off as the race progressed, and by lap 6 Woodward had passed for the lead, maintaining a comfortable buffer all the way to the pitstops.
Radical Masters newcomer Gavin Kershaw was doing a sterling job in the Slim Racing SR8, putting the car into a secure second-position for the handover to Christian Droop. The Radical Works Team SR8 of Shaun Balfe was also flying, just ahead of the leading four-cylinder car, Per Staaf’s PR6, on form all weekend.
The pits opened on lap 8, all cars making it cleanly through the stop. Kaiser held station all the way to the flag from then on, unchallenged to build a lead of 23.7 seconds; a red flag on lap 16 finished the race. Bromiley managed to leapfrog Droop in the pits for second, Radical Germany’s driver coming home a successful third.
Per Staaf finished fourth overall and fastest in the Invitational class, a fantastic result for this Radical Masters rookie, with Meidinger, fifth, the fastest SR5, just ahead of Radical Italy’s rapid pairing of Andrea Fausti and Marco Cencetti in the SR3 RS.
“It’s fantastic to be at Spa with the SR8, and obviously very satisfying to leave with some silverware,” said Balfe. “The race went like clockwork, and it really helped that the front pack were so close. We opted to pit early to avoid traffic, which worked really well; it was a great race.”
The Radical Masters season now rolls on to the Nürburgring, Germany on 26/27 June, a hugely successful track in 2009, and one that’s bound to satisfy both racers and spectators. This event also forms the third 2010 round of the Competition Car Insurance Radical UK Cup, but before that they rejoin the Quaife Radical Clubman’s Cup (competing this weekend at Snetterton) on 29-31 May.
