BRDC Award Winner To Drive Radical At Silverstone

9th September 2009

2008 McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year, Alexander Sims, will make a guest appearance in the Radical European Masters round at Silverstone this weekend.

The 21-year-old currently competes in the F3 Euro Series, and his outing at Silverstone comes only a week after his F3 podium finish at Brands Hatch. Last month, Sims took his first F3 win, at the Nürburgring in Germany.

The Wansford driver is one of motorsport’s hottest rising stars, and earlier in the year took the coveted Driver of the Year prize, voted on by a panel of motorsport luminaries. Previous holders of the award include David Coulthard, Dario Franchitti, Jensen Button and Oliver Jarvis.

Sims will be piloting a Radical SR8 on his own, the weekend forming a steep learning curve, his first experience of both rolling starts and endurance racing.

“I got talking to Radical once I noticed that the factory was just a few miles from my home,” said Sims.  “I’m always keen to pursue relationships in the business and I’d been following the progress of their car in the Le Mans Series.  I wanted to see if there’d be any opportunities to do something together and Silverstone presented itself pretty well due to both our respective schedules.

“I’m looking forward to getting out there in the Radical this weekend.  I saw the Radical car close up for the first time last week and it looks excellent! I think it’ll be tough but a lot of fun, there’s no pressure on me but as always I want to do well no matter what I’m racing.  My goal is to reach Formula One but I enjoy all forms of racing and it’s always good as a young driver to sample different types of equipment.  It’s good to make new contacts and expose yourself to other race formats and for me, it’s another great opportunity to race at home following a fairly successful weekend in F3 at Brands Hatch!”
